What is Trauma Informed Practice (TIP)?

Foundations of TIP

Trauma-informed practice (TIP) means integrating an understanding of the effects of trauma into all aspects of organizational actions; participant engagement, workforce development, agency policy and interagency work. TIP is about a way of being in relationships with program participants, co-workers, leaders and partners – so that safety, trustworthiness, collaboration, connection, choice and skills are developed and enhanced.

Trauma-informed practice:

  • Involves multiple levels of action
  • Is based on four principles
  • Is a universal approach
  • Has a wellness orientation and is about enhancing resilience
  • Is aligned with anti-oppressive practice and cultural safety
