YWCA Toronto Grieves Gun Violence Incident at Salsa on St. Clair

July 2026

We at YWCA Toronto extend our solidarity and compassion to those impacted by the tragic incident of gun violence this past weekend at Salsa on St. Clair.

Gun violence is not an isolated issue; it is a compounding public health crisis that echoes through families, neighbourhoods, and generations. The impacts extend beyond immediate victims, perpetuating cycles of trauma, fear, and lateral violence. At its root, gun violence is often a symptom of broader systemic inequities, including structural racism, anti-Blackness, socio-economic exclusion, and the enduring effects of colonialism.

Following this incident, YWCA Toronto reaffirms that solidarity and safety go hand in hand. We recognize community as an essential component of safety and wellbeing, and something that we must create and sustain through acts of care, compassion, and understanding.

While we continue to advocate for the urgent implementation of stronger gun legislation and increased investment in community safety, we also call on each other to mobilize for community wellbeing:

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbours
  • Volunteer in your neighbourhood
  • Share your concerns with your City Councilor and Member of Provincial Parliament

Community is not just the place where you live, it is also the actions you take in solidarity with those around you.
